48hours in NYC

June, 2016

I spent 48hours in New York with my boyfriend mid-march and even though it partly snowed we had a lot of fun exploring this magic city!
We stayed at a charming airbnb place in Brooklyn. The apartment at Mayor's Mansion was beautifully decorated with a lot of attention to detail, bright and very comfortable. The location couldn't be better - lovely neighborhood cafes around the corner and all subway stations only a few blocks away. These kind of spacious and charming places are not easy to find in NYC and we were really lucky.
The first day was quite chilly but the sky was blue and the sun warmed us up. Ideal to cross Brooklyn Bridge and getting a first glance on Manhattan's skyline. We tried to avoid the subway and walked as much as we could.

From Brooklyn Bridge we made our way to East Village and spotted Gasoline Alley Coffee. A small hidden place located on Lafayette St./East Houston St. The coffee roasts were excellent and I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the plain decor. Just a few blocks away we found a nice retail shop with beautiful interior design objects and inspirations. Stop by Nalata Nalata if you’re around East Village, really nice!

As this was my first time in New York, I had to realize my childhood dream and went up Empire State Building. The views over the impressive skyscrapers and Central Park were stunning. I really enjoyed it, however next time I'll try Rockefeller Center as apparently it offers even better views :-) We strolled cross Central Park and later in the evening from one avenue to the other. The bustling New York city life was quite impressive and after a while we became really hungry. I had heard about Burger Joint and truly crashed on this secret burger place, hidden behind the curtains of Le Meridien's hotel lobby - great fun and definitely on top of my burger list!

Next morning it started snowing so we decided to spend the day at MoMA. On our way we had to stop by ShakeShack: which two Australians we met at Burger Joint the night before had recommended. Wow, they were right the burgers were irresistible! ShakeShack’s commitment: 100% all-natural Angus beef and fresh ingredients. After having tried different burger types the „SmokeShack“ became my favorite - still raving about this delicious cheeseburger topped with all-natural applewood smoked bacon!

It was clear that I couldn’t leave NYC without trying the notorious New York Cheesecake! We made our way through several places and finally spotted Two Little Red Hens. Charming cake shop on the Upper East Side. It didn’t stop snowing and when we entered the place our shoes were soggy and all we focused on was hot coffee and a piece of cheesecake. Wow, that cake literally kicked me off! Homemade, creamy, a feast! Seriously! Not only do they bake irresistible cheesecake but also incredible cupcakes and brownies. Both of us didn't feel like leaving and so we shared cake after cake.

Eventually we managed to go to MoMA and got surprised with free entry tickets! Every Friday from 4pm to 8pm admission is free during UNIQLO Free Friday Nights. We were amongst the lucky once and enjoyed the modern art exhibition. Architecture and Design were my favorites and I would have loved to spend more time wondering around...another reason to come back!

On Saturday we realized there wasn't much time left to explore Brooklyn and Williamsburg before catching our flight. We still managed to try and taste TOBY'S ESTATE COFFEE. The baristas serve excellent coffee. We went there in the morning and barely found a spare place. It seems to be the perfect catch up point with friends in the neighborhood. We enjoyed it a lot and crushed on the delicious blueberry muffins and smoothy banana cake - a dream! On our way back we spotted OAK, a NYC-based men's and women's clothing brand store which I quite liked for it’s industrial decor and atmosphere.

48hours went by too quickly and I’d love to come back soon in the spring or autumn enjoying indian summer in New York!
