København | Denmark's creative hub

May, 2015

Hej København - nice to meet you!! I've been waiting since a while to finally get to discover this Danish capital - source of inspiration for scandinavian design freaks like me ;-)

Only a 50min flight away from Berlin and here we go! From international airport Lufthaven it will only take you about 13 minutes to the city center (M2). We arrived on a sunny friday evening. Afterwork mood was in the air and you could feel & smell mid-summer everywhere.

When in Copenhagen, rent a bike! You'll easily find a rental station on every corner. For me there is no better way to get to see Copenhagen and discover its various concept stores, museums and exciting culinary scene. I therefore have explored Denmark's creative hup to scoop the best spots. Here are my top favorites:

WHERE TO SLEEP?
AirBnB is always a good choice when looking for a local experience - especially since danish interiors are always so tasteful and inspiring.
Hotel SP34 - a charming boutique hotel centrally located in Copenhagen's old Latin Quarter (locationwise a great choice).

WHERE TO EAT?
Copenhagen's culinary scene is vast and it can be quite overwhelming to find the right place when only staying for a weekend. Here's a selection of my personal preferences:

Atelier September, a charming brunch place serving french & danish delights - I fell in love with the interior decor & welcoming atmosphere.
Another great breakfast place is Grød - for those who love porridge, you'll be in heaven ;-)
The Coffee Collective - it's hand downs THE best coffee place in Copenhagen! You'll find them all over the city, but my favorite one is inside Torvehallerne's food hall.
If you're looking for some incredible stone oven pizza, then MOTHER is the place to have lunch or dinner.
Don't leave Copenhagen without trying Danish Pastry - Direktørsnegl (director's snail) is a delicious type of cinnamon roll - you'll find the best ones at Lagkagehuset - I had to seriously stop by every Lagkagehuset Bakery we crossed ;-) Don't miss it!!

I'm a big fan of food halls and markets (as you might already have noticed in my article about Berlin's street food revolution ;-)
Torvehallerne is a great place to stroll around different food stands and have brunch, lunch or dinner with friends!
Papirøen - a street food market right by the water. Ideal to enjoy the evening with locals - for me a must when in Copenhagen.

Den Økologiske Pølsemand (organic hot dog stand) :
Near the Round Tower ( Købmagergade 52) there's this hot dog stand - they serve "organic" hot dogs with whole wheat bread *it's really yummi!!* If you're looking for some street food during the day, this is a good option :)

FASHION & INTERIOR DESIGN:
I love scandinavian design and in particular danish interior details. I could have stayed for hours wondering around HAY's flag ship store and Ferm Living. Amongst my favorite concept stores there's Nordic Nesting, Bolia and Normann Copenhagen. I travelled on purpose with an empty suitcase and left Copenhagen packed. You'll find my treasures at the end of the photo gallery ;-)

When it comes to fashion, I couldn't resist ACNE Store & Archive, Samsøe & Samsøe, Stine Goya Store and Another Nué...

NOT TO MISS:
Superkilen, only a 20min bike ride heading North and definitely worth a trip! You'll find a kilometre-long park divided into 3 areas: the ‘Red Square’, the ‘Black Market’ and the ‘Green Park’. Superkilen was designed to emphasize the ethnical diversity of the neighborhood and aims integration. White lines curve their way around objects and hills. Impressive and great for different photo-prospectives!

On a sunny afternoon a walk around Christiania can be really fun. It's a self-governing community and a real alternative to the rest of the city!

Nyhavn is the famous canal, that goes from Kongens Nytorv to Royal Playhouse - walking around it and then stopping for a beer on one of the bars in the shore is great, especially with good weather.

And then it was time to say "hej hej & farvel København" it's been a feast! My first trip to Copenhagen and for sure I'll be back soon :-)
